Marko Mäkelä
Goldsmith Marko Mäkelä graduated from Lahti Polytechnic Institute of Design in 1992 and has worked for Kalevala Jewelry since 1994. In his primary role in Kalevala Jewelry, goldsmith Marko Mäkelä transfers other designers' visions into prototype jewellery models. Mäkelä makes casting models, modifications and adjustments of old models and processes modelling with 3D-software. He has spezialised in processing casting models by hand and so called zero series (model series). Mäkelä is also responsible for manufacture of the company’s unique jewellery which demand very special expertice.
The most demanding and at the same time the most rewarding part in a model goldsmith’s work is according to Marko Mäkelä the solving of problems that seem insurmountable. Evidence for his logical train of thoughts and passion for solving technical problems is also the fact that he according to the tests of Mensa has been defined as beyond-genius and that he was nominated Lighthead of the Year (City-magazine/2004). Thus the head designer of the company Kirsti Doukas does not call her “jack-of-all-trades concerning goldsmith’s work ” in vain.
