Jewellery made by coiling two or more solid silver wires is familiar to many cultures. Such jewellery was used as far back as in pre-historic times, but the design was particularly popular in the Middle Ages. Spiral jewellery was also worn in the Baltic Sea region; in Scandinavia, such jewellery was often made of gold. The prototype for this jewellery dates back to the time of the Crusades, 1050-1150 A.D.
