The Tales of Hoffman, an opera by Jacques Offenbach, takes place in the Romance era of the early 1800s.
In the opera Hoffman recounts, as if in a dream, the loves and losses of his life to a rapt tavern audience. The story is filled with magic and surrealistic visions. The characters of the opera provided an inspiration to jewellery designer Kirsti Doukas for her second jewellery collection of Savonlinna Opera Festival. Each of the silver-encased glass reliefs interpret the essential nature of Hoffman’s three beloved ones. The tale speaks firstly of Olympia, who turns out to be a mechanical doll; the translucent glass relief in her pendant is decorated with a clear and simple flower bud. The young and innocent Antonia is portrayed in a delicate rose-coloured pendant featuring a flower bud that has just started to open. The pendant of Venetian seductress Giulietta depicts sensuous womanhood with its deep red colour and flower motif in full bloom. The patterns and colours of the glass reliefs in the collection reflect both the women in the opera and the world of The Tales of Hoffman. The production of rosecoloured earrings and earrings with clip will discontinue 31.01.2009.
