The tale of the Finnish opera ”The Horseman”, by Aulis Sallinen, begins in the house of a Novgorod merchant where a horseman Antti an his wife Anna are slaves. “The Horseman” is a romantic story describing love under circumstances that prove to be thorny not only for a man but especially for a woman. The world of opera is where Kirsti Doukas draws her inspiration for the third jewellery collection of the Savonlinna Opera Festival. The allusion to “The Horseman” is inspired by objests found in the world of horsemanship: metal rings, harnesses, and learher straps and laces. In men’s collection, silver is combined with black leather that portrays the spirit of the time. In women’s jewellery, the surface of both silver and the pale leather are embellished with delicate figures that evoke the end of the tale when Anna sings a beautiful lulluby to her dead husband. The Horseman jewellery collection has an intriguing way of embodying the theme of the opera as well as the modern jewellery design language.
