The time: the Stone Age, about 2000 BC. The place: the northern coniferous forest zone stretching from the Atlantic to the Urals… Hunting tools with handles depicting animal heads were made from quartzite or soapstone. We can only guess why the image of an elkhead adorns a stone made hunting tool discovered in Finland. During the Stone Age, the elk was the most important game animal and because of its speed and noble gait, a cult object as well. Cave drawings reveal that animal headed hunting tools were used in celebrations.
