The bear was the strongest of the characters. It was told how the bear was the son of Hongatar, how the mother of woodlands had given birth to him "up in the heavens, on the shoulders of the Plough". The bear was treated with great respect and fear, after all it was a half human and half forest being. And also because he who bore the sign of the bear held sway over both people and nature.
