The prototype for this piece is a charm found at Kekomäki in Kaukola, which is on the Karelian isrtmus. This find dates from the end of the Viking Era and the northern crusades, around the year of 1000 A.D. Like other Kalevala Jewelry designs, this striking piece was inspired by the rich ornamental world of archeological finds.
