This Saame pendant is modelled after a find in Inari, Lapland. The monogram of the Virgin Mary, the letter M decorated with a crown and a heart hangs from a ball-shaped silver charm. Such ornamets were often sewn into a baby's cradle wrappings during theMiddle Ages to keep the earth spirits from exchanging the child for one of their own. The silver charm, in particular, was thought to offer good protection because the spirits did not have stamped silver.
