It was thought that flying birds were in communion with the gods. They were believed to have knowledge to which only the gods were privy and which humans could only learn if they spoke the language of birds. Perhaps this explains why many seers travelled to their ancestors in the guise of a bird. The bird was a messenger between man and the gods.
