This jewelry draws its inspiration from a decorative charm belt originating from Janakkala, in the province of Häme. Leather belts decorated with metal charms date back to prehistoric times. Later on, more delicate charms were used to decorate national costumes. Mothers and daughters have traditionally carried practical items, such as keys, purses, knives and combs on their belts. Women were delighted by the tinkling sound produced while they were dancing.
It was widely believed that this sound would ward off evil spirits and maybe even draw the attention of young men.
